We begin our prayer by making the sign of the cross.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Pentecost is a special feast day of the Church. This day is important as we remember that it was on Pentecost day that the Holy Spirit filled the hearts and minds of Jesus' disciples - it made them very courageus to spread the Good News about Jesus! After being filled with the Holy Spirit, the disciples went out and spread the Good News about Jesus, this increased the faith in people and thus the Church was born! Pentecost is therefore called the birthday of the church.

Let us now read about the Pentecost story from the Bible.

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles

When the day of Pentecost came, all the believers were gathered together in one place. Suddenly there was a noise from the sky which sounded like a strong wind blowing, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then they saw what looked like tongues of fire which spread out and touched each person there. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to talk in other languages, as the Spirit enabled them to speak.

There were Jews living in Jerusalem, religious people who had come from every country in the world. When they heard this noise, a large crowd gathered. They were all excited because all of them heard the believers talking in their own languages.

God Sends the Holy Spirit

Action - Good News!

Think about the Pentecost story. What gifts do you think the Holy Spirit gave the disciples?

How did these gifts help them to spread the Good News?

Think about a Good News that you could give to someone- this could be a simple message like:

- God loves you

- You are special

- You are loved

Design a Pentecost symbol, you can write your Good News on this symbol and give it to someone else or place it in a special place.

Here are some ideas ...

We will now spend a few moments reflecting on the song 'Burning in my soul'. You may wish to sing along and make this song your prayer.

We will end our prayer by making the sign of the cross.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
